Moto Pho Co.

Flank steak pho with accoutrements at Moto Pho Co in Charlottesville, VAMoto Pho Co., Charlottesville’s answer to a high-low style of glammed-up street fare, promises a lot but falls short on the delivery. Tucked into the same West Main location as the new Eloise in Charlottesville’s increasingly developed midtown area, the restaurant looks inviting from the outside and impeccable inside. Bright white walls, minimalist lighting, and plenty of stainless steel, Moto Pho Co. feels like Charlottesville does L.A. The old auto service building has been scrubbed, painted, and shellacked into a place as stylish and minimalist as its menu. The restaurant offers a very brief list of options… Read More

Buttz BBQ

Three meats, two sides platter: (clockwise from top left) pulled pork, ribs, baked beans, white slaw and pulled chicken. When considering the range of late-night food options on the Corner, one could wonder what more they could ask for. Between pizza, sandwiches, and burritos, it seemed that any eater could get their fill after midnight. Now, Buttz BBQ has stumbled onto the scene, and is serving delicious barbeque from 11:30 pm – 3 am. What’s even better than barbeque that tastes great at  2 am? Buttz offers several types of meat and many different accompanying sides. After hearing rumors that this joint was serving up worthwhile barbeque on… Read More

Since Tokyo Rose’s reopening in 2005, every time we visit there’s always a sprinkling of patrons but it doesn’t exactly scream nightlife. The setting is nice enough with a sushi bar that I’ve never seen anyone sit at and a private room with traditional Japanese floor seating. Supposedly there’s a downstairs karaoke bar but we have… Read More

Cavalier Diner

cavalier diner - 1I can say without hesitation that our recent trip to the Cavalier Diner on Emmet Street (previously Sam’s Kitchen) resulted in one of the worst meals we’ve had in Charlottesville. Or anywhere. It was so bad that for the few belchy hours that followed Erin kept asking me if I thought she was going to get sick. I forced a smile and assured her she didn’t eat enough for that. But I wondered.

The first sign of trouble is when you walk in. It’s nice enough from the exterior, and the interior actually isn’t terrible to look at. The problem is that it’s not so nice to smell. I don’t know how to describe it… Read More
