B Blues BBQ smoker at the Joy gas station in Charlottesville, VAI’ve always felt like the number of BBQ joints in town is out of sync with the quantity and enthusiasm of pork-consuming Charlottesvillians. Consider the fact that we have at least 9 Thai restaurants, 26 Mexican restaurants, and 27 Chinese restaurants.* Many of the proprietors of these establishments have traveled 1000s of miles to set up shop in our fair town and have taken a gamble on forging a viable business out of a foreign cuisine where there are nevertheless many established competitors and where authentic ingredients can be harder to come by.

2nd Annual Midtown Street Fair: BBQ Cook-off

Maya's smokily delicious pulled pork with peach mustard sauce at the 2nd Annual Midtown Street Fair in Charlottesville, VASaturday was the perfect day for the 2nd Annual Midtown Street Fair. Amidst live music, thumb wrestling contests, face painting, and the Derby Dames, was an intense BBQ Cookoff. We had the pleasure of being judges, alongside Police Chief Longo, City Manager Maurice Jones, and Director of Neighborhood Development Services Jim Tolbert.

Blue Moon Diner, Horse & Hound Gastropub, Maya, Orzo Kitchen & Wine Bar, and Zinc offered up their best pork plates for West Main BBQ bragging rights. Orzo’s rich saucy Q was the winner, followed by runner-up Maya’s pulled pork with peach mustard sauce… Read More

Blue Ridge Pig 

Hard to see but massive ribs and excellent pork and beans and slaw at Blue Ridge Pig in Nellysford, VASometimes a restaurant just calls to you. It whispers sweet oinks in your ear while you’re sleeping and sculpts pig shapes in the clouds overhead. “Come, my child,” it says. “Come and sit for a spell. Take a load off. Let us fatten you up with some tender morsels of hearty saltpork.” After reading that a carefully judged BBQ competition resulted in a tie between BBQ Exchange and Blue Ridge Pig, a friend asked us what we thought about going to the latter for a small birthday party.
