View of rolling hills from the patio at Pippin Hill Farms & Vineyard outside Charlottesville, VAGo. To here. Now. Seriously. Stop reading and go while there’s still some daylight to illuminate the view. Go before 5pm, while they’re still serving food. Because there are great views to be had elsewhere – King Family or Veritas, for example – and then there’s this. There is perfectly fine food to be had elsewhere in the region – Blue Mountain or Dr. Ho’s, for example – and then there’s this.

If you ever went to the Albemarle County Fair, you ate funnel cake and drank obnoxiously sweet lemonade on a patch of ground that was to become part of Pippin Hill. Now, the lemonade has been replaced with some highly drinkable Virginia wines, the funnel cake with artfully presented seasonal dishes that are far more delicious than they need to be.

Local beef sliders with parmesan fries at Pippin Hill Farm & Vineyards outside Charlottesville, VAArriving in a small cast iron skillet, the Croque Monsieur with Virginia ham, gruyere, and sweet onion jam, was buttered and toasted to a perfect crisp. The local beef sliders, with a sweet smokey sauce, cheddar, and caramelized onions (and parmesan fries on the side), satisfied my greasy burger craving without straying too far from the higher brow culture of the wine tasting. Both the re-constructed trout “po-boy” and the panzanella salad with corn and parmesan shavings, rode that fine line of high and low browage expertly well. Everyone in your party will find something to enjoy, and they will all agree, as we did, that it’s delicious. How we managed to get out of there without trying the petit verdot cupcakes is a complete mystery, however.

The tasting room and patio feel like they were put together for an Easton event, elegant and comfortable in equal measure. A great place for a day date – some tables/lounge areas are more secluded than others – it’s also a great place for a play date. Kids can run around while the parents enjoy an adult beverage or two. You’ll find it hard to leave your chair with a perfect view, even after you sober up enough to drive home.
