Being born in Vermont and now a Charlottesville townie, it only slightly pains me to say Absolutely Forget about Ben & Jerry’s and Arch’s. Just don’t even bother (with the gentle exception of gooey brownie). The best ice cream you have ever eaten in your life is only an hour or so away, straight up 29 at Moo Thru. For your own sake, and the sake of your wardrobe which does not appreciate being drenched in summer sweat, take a field trip somewhere up 29 and stop by Moo Thru. The silkiest deeply flavorful farm fresh milk turned into fresh cold treats will draw your eyes into the back of your head and make your eyes smile and sparkle with the pure kind of joy known only to mischievous children.
Straight from the website: “Moo Thru ice cream is made from only the finest ingredients. The milk used in Moo Thru ice cream comes from our own prize winning grass fed Holstein herd on a farm along the banks of the Rappahannock River about a mile from Moo Thru. Our ice cream is flavored by the finest Italian gels and pastes available. All ice cream is made on the premises in our special machines.” Couldn’t say it better myself.
Literally every flavor they sell is delicious, I’m partial to ‘Moundz’. As you might imagine, this spoof of the ubiquitous Mounds bar is coconut and dark chocolate, but with the creaminess and pacifying full chewiness of coconut that the bar lacks. Moo Thru’s milkshakes do in fact bring all the boys to the yard, and no matter who you represent, I believe it’s better than yours.
