Basic Necessities in Nellysford, outside Charlottesville, VAIf you like any of the following things, you should get into your car and race out to Basic Necessities at your earliest opportunity:

  1. Scenic drives in the country that end with sausage.
  2. Cozy, fireplace-warmed dining rooms with friendly harpists strumming large harps.
  3. Enormous goblets of mimosas.
  4. Powdered sugar.
  5. Spectacularly fluffy pancakes.
  6. Cookies shaped like pretzels.

Fluffy pancakes and sausage at powder-sugar-happy Basic Necessities outside Charlottesville, VAThat’s pretty much the size of it. If you haven’t been to Basic Necessities in Nellysford, you’re missing out on one of the more charming, tasty brunches in Central Virginia. To be fair, we didn’t try the egg dish, and the french toast wasn’t as exciting as the pancakes, but those pancakes are prize winners. If someone can explain how to achieve that kind of fluffiness – Basic Necessities wouldn’t share its secret – I’m all ears. Whip the egg? More baking soda? Water? Regardless, these are maybe the best I’ve had in the area.

It won’t be the cheapest brunch you’ve ever had, and it won’t have the widest selection of options – it’s essentially a fixed price menu with a few brunch entrée options – but it’s worth it. Have I told you about the pancakes?

Thanks to Paul Goossens for the recommendation!

Erin says: “A cozy brunch choice off the beaten path, particularly if you have a sweet tooth and like giant mimosas.”
