The beer selection is great, but the bar is small and it gets the feel of a frat party at times. The food is good, but their bread selection is awful. The bread they use for sandwiches is too doughy, and the taste is bland, and I'm sorry, but the pretzel rolls have to go, a hot dog or a bratwurst on those pretzel rolls is just so wrong...

This place has one of the best vibes in Charlottesville, sort of like sitting at the bar at C&O. You would think sitting at the bar while people peruse the beer around you would be weird and off-putting, but everyone (staff and customers) is so friendly and outgoing. I've had more non-drunken conversations with complete strangers at this place than any other in town (caveat - I've only been in town since '95). The food is not amazing, but it's better than it needs to be.

Jeannine, thanks for your comment and the turkey trot recommendation - that's a combo I often love so will have to give it a try at Beer Run.

Draper, our most recent visit was my fourth time eating there. I do keep going back because I want to love the food more than I do - or because the drinking experience is good enough, so who cares about the food. I love the family-owned establishments so good to know that side to Beer Run (and we've been fans of Mel's in the past so good call to head back there for a review). We will continue to give Beer Run a couple more tries for the food, but only if you agree to give Zinc another shot :-)

If this was one of your first experiences at Beer Run I can understand your review. I loved the unique location, atmosphere(for what it is), and the beer selection the first few times I went...but as you all experienced I was very underwhelmed with the food. The sandwiches and meals always looked great, but they never seemed to quite get me. However, I pushed through those experiences and for whatever reason the food became very good. They use a lot of local products and they also force you to steer away from the usual fries that I would order and eat something that leaves me feeling a little more healthy and less bloated. Their pretzel bread is delicious, although I would prefer a less voluminous bread on the sandwiches because it tends to overwhelm the sandwich. I have also found that in general the servers and bartenders there are very kind and helpful. Another fact that draws me to this place is that it is owned and run by a mother and her two sons, with her daughter working there as well. There is something about family owned and run establishment that give the place a good feeling. Mel's Cafe is another example of that(Mel, his mother, and his brothers). I think if you all give the food a couple more tries you will find your right order and be very happy with it, if not you can just keep enjoying the rotating cast of beers and the occasional pile of nachos.

I've really enjoyed eating at Beer Run. The Turkey Trot sandwich and the seafood pasta are usually pretty good!
