I remember when the Tavern shut down. We were going almost every weekend in those days. The pumpkin pancakes were equally good then as now. Do you think less of us?

Perhaps I've understated the matter. Just last year The Tavern was shut down by the state after a salmonella outbreak. Sixteen people infected. It took them two tries to get open again—they couldn't even get the place clean when they were doing nothing but cleaning it. They have the worst series of health department inspection reports that I've ever seen, and I've probably looked at a couple of hundred in the past few years. It's disgusting. Their most recent health inspection, from just one month ago, included five critical violations, including a key repeat offense: staff not washing their hands, which is precisely what led to the salmonella outbreak in the first place.

I once had a job in Spain with a Frenchman (this is not the beginning of a joke). I asked him why French pastries were so superior to American pastries. He replied, “Because you Americans are overly concerned with hygiene.” I don't know if that's true, and even if it is I don't think we need to actively reduce our hygiene, but I do know that bleach makes food taste bad. It's also a fact that I've gotten sick more times from C&O than The Tavern, which is to say 1 vs. 0.

Dear God in heaven, what lapse in judgement made you think that it would be a good idea to eat at The Tavern? I guess there wasn't quite enough fecal matter in your pumpkins to affect the flavor. Which is a bit like finding half a worm in your apple. Seriously, you've checked out their health inspection history, haven't you?

This is a great review, the type that makes me want to go to the restaurant immediately and try their food. The Tavern should pay you for advertising. I will make a visit there this week solely for their pumpkin pancakes.
