I went there on Thursday and the service was horrible. The waitress spoke very poor English and totally screwed up my order. I wanted shrimp with rice and got NOODLES!!! The manager/owner was a jack@#$. He did not apologize nor did try to resolve the matter. I would highly suggest going to a different Thai restaurant. Oh, did I mention how nasty the restroom was. It was deplorable. The server decided it was okay to clean up after taking our orders and proceeded to clean the tables with her hands. How disgusting!! I am not sure if she does this in her country, but it is people like her why we have the health department!! I will be calling them on Monday to show them the photos I took.

Tara Thai isn't a chain in the same way as, say, P.F. Chang's. The first one was a smallish restaurant on the ground floor of an office building in Vienna, VA. It opened in the late 1980s or early 1990s. At the time, they served some of the best Thai food in the DC suburbs, and specialized in Thai seafood. We used to eat there frequently. The owner, trading on his success, opened another location, and another, and another... Some of the employees of the original went on to open their own restaurants (Neisha Thai is one and also has 2 locations now).

So I wouldn't necessarily write Tara Thai off as a "mall chain", but that said, we ate at the Barracks Rd. restaurant shortly after they opened and thought it was just OK. You can request that the food be prepared with more hot peppers, or just ask them to bring the condiment tray so each diner can season the food to his/her liking.

Hi! I really love your blog! It's wonderful to read about local dining choices. I've tried the Larb at Tara Thai too, and I have to agree that it exceeded my expectations. I recently started a food blog based in Charlottesville too! Come check it out.

Hotcakes still potentially moving. Cavalier is too connected and the leasing agent knows this. Greenberrys stsarted there, but draws tons of traffic and ultimately is a chain these days.

I remember the Rose's days. You could actually find a parking spot near the store back then. Barracks Road is like the glossy anchor for the string of chains that links CHO to UVA. Aromas, Rebecca's, Hotcakes, Cavalier Pipe & Tobacco (is that still there?) -- are those the only non-chain places in the main section? Let's just hope the area doesn't start expanding up towards the sky.

Is anyone surprised that Barracks has anything but chains? They dump everything unique and individual for corporate. Aromas only being the exception to the rule. They dumped a bakery that actually ground, in house, their own flour and wheat and grains for Panera, which ships in frozen bread and bagel dough dialy. They jacked the Book Cellar for B & N. They dumped the pizza joint that Tara Thai occupies sos that another gourmet pizza chain from the south can come in shortly. Granted, the place is 1000 times nicer than when Roses was the big draw, but still can suck on the uniquness quotient.
