I hear what you're saying, hueM. Many people we've spoken to feel like you do, and there's no question that C&O benefits from a certain Charlottesville mythos. I also had one bad experience, but otherwise haven't had the mediocre experience that others describe. Maybe it's a matter of getting the right dishes? Or maybe just luck. It's also true that they're not great for vegetarians, though the vegetarian pavé, which changes, has been excellent the few times I've tried it. Hopefully the growing backlash will compel them towards the more uniform excellence that many of us remember...

I am really bummed about the positive review of C&O. Such a hometown favorite that I still have never figured out in the 8 years of living here. What is up with this place? Such a weird a eclectic mix of food that is mediocre at best and is way overpriced. If you go there with a vegetarian friend then they are totally screwed. This place has a nice atmosphere in this ragtime countrified wester saloon style. My wife and I spent $10 on a stale frozen piece of cake that was so bad we sent it back. Truly a bummer. It is sad that C-ville is so self congratulatory that there is no healthy competition.
