It doesn’t require a lot to make my weekend mornings happy ones. No alarm clock, a nice cup of coffee, hearty eggs, and some fried potatoes go a long way. Tip Top seemed like a sure bet given its constantly crowded parking lot on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Counter seating and cozy booths for classic diner ambience? Check. Swiftly delivered food at bargain prices? Check. Friendly service? Check, with a big “what can I get you, sweetheart?” and smile. All the elements were in place.
The food, sadly, was not. Now, let me say up front that people we’ve talked to are big fans of the Tip Top lunch. You have to choose between the breakfast or lunch menu when seated, and we may have chosen wrong with breakfast. Given the loyal Tip Top following, it’s worth a return trip to try out their lunch and dinner options, which include diner standards such as subs, sandwiches, salads, in addition to pizzas, pastas, and Greek specialities like Gyros and Souvlaki.![]()
The breakfast menu also includes classic diner fare. One egg or two, any style. A variety of omelets. Golden brown waffles, french toast, and strawberry, corn, chocolate chip, and buckwheat pancakes. All options sounded delicious but the delivery was less than satisfying. A cheese omelet was filled with Velveeta that had hardened to a rubbery goo. The chocolate chip pancakes were just so-so, and really, there’s no reason to eat chocolate before noon if it’s just so-so. But my biggest complaints were the home fries – huge potato chunks without enough flavor or frying time – and the bacon – grisly. As someone equally torn between a love for bacon and potatoes, it is upsetting to see mediocre versions of either, especially when it takes so little to make them delicious. What a waste of clogged arteries.
Jed says: “The Greek diner food might be great, but compared to The Tavern and many other places around town, the breakfast at Tip Top is Base Bottom.”
