Just a quick note: we advertise our bagels as "NY Style" because that's what they are. Prepped in-house from six ingredients (flour, water, malt, salt, sugar, yeast), boiled before baked -- "NY Style" adequately describes that we're not the frozen-dough circular bread that gets baked on sheet trays in many other establishments. We're not an H&H copycat (you couldn't if you tried: Adirondack water? yeast microbes in the air? wheat from the same mill? And charge $1.40/bagel?!?), but we do make a quality product that adheres to the tradition.

NY Bagel'r, your next one is on me. Sometimes one slips past us. My apologies. And I do understand the hometown pride.

For the record, Bodo's are boiled and baked, just like a real bagel should be. I don't know if they use oil, and I'm not sure if they use sugar or malt. But in general, they're not cakey, and they're a decent shape.

I've eaten thousands of bagels in NYC and NJ, and I absolutely think Bodo's are good bagels. I'd put it like this. The best bagels I've had at Bodo's are better than many bagels I've eaten in NYC/NJ, but the best I've eaten in NYC/NJ are better than the best Bodo's.

I guess it depends on what "New York bagels" means. To me, it means not the crap you find at Panera, rolls with a whole.

I've actually had many an excellent NYC bagel, usually at a random street corner deli at an odd hour of the evening after having too much fun with friends. Even if they were better than Bodo's, within these county limits Bodo's reigns supreme! But, you're right. They would stand well enough on their own without the "NY Bagel" claim...

No worries! Just wish Bodos would stick with being... Bodos. Their New York bagel claim is a huge misrepresentation, and I've always suspected they do it for marketing hype. Which, ultimately, is unfair to great foodie customers like yourselves who have not had the benefit of tasting some H&H Bagels. Sigh, if only you all could taste a perfectly boiled and baked NYC bagel...

I'm kicking myself for erasing a line I originally had in this review: "Are Bodo's bagels the best bagels this side of the Mississippi? Depends on whether or not you're from New York." Thanks for the perspective, NY Bagel'r!

As a native New Yorker replanted in C'ville, I cannot attest enough to just how BAD these bagels are. They are NOT "New York bagels" and never will be. I once ordered a bakers dozen at the 29 shop, and one of my "bagels" was croissant-shaped. Please, Virginians, don't be fooled by this lackluster imposter.

Bodo's Bagels are quite simply the best bagels on the face of the earth.

http://www.greeneggsmarketing.com/2009/04/bodos...
